What Is Workplace Conflict?
Collaboration among employees with diverse backgrounds and priorities can lead to conflicts in any organization. Communication misunderstandings, personality clashes, and mismanagement are some of the causes of conflicts that can result in various forms such as bullying, lack of cooperation, insults, and anger. Negative consequences of workplace conflicts include decreased productivity, project failure, absenteeism, work disruptions, turnover, and termination. Emotional stress can be both a cause and a result of workplace conflict.
Conflict is often perceived negatively in the workplace, but a certain degree of conflict is considered normal and can be beneficial. Effective teams are those in which members feel comfortable enough to express disagreement with one another. A culture that allows or even encourages respectful debate of topics can stimulate innovation, diversity of thought, and better decision-making. When conflict is openly discussed and properly defined in the workplace, communication is able to effectively take place around disagreements and avoid taking a turn into conflict. Constructive conflict, when openly defined, can foster higher levels of trust. If individuals see that it is acceptable to challenge their manager, they can question existing norms and practices, ultimately benefiting the company.
Conflict often becomes unhealthy when its foundation is personal and emotional, often leading to biased judgment. When company policies are created defining Destructive Conflict and Constructive Conflict, and are routinely discussed with the whole team, everyone in the organization is given a sense of understanding and a guide to culture based language.

How Does Unresolved Workplace Conflict Affect Company Culture?
Unresolved workplace conflict can have several negative consequences. It can create a toxic work environment characterized by tension, hostility, and mistrust among employees. This can lead to decreased morale, job dissatisfaction, and increased employee turnover. Additionally, unresolved conflict can hinder effective communication and collaboration within teams. It can create barriers to sharing ideas, opinions, and feedback, which can impede productivity and interfere with the achievement of organizational goals. When conflicts are not addressed, they can also escalate and become more serious issues over time. They may result in increased absenteeism, decreased productivity, and a decline in overall team performance. Unresolved conflicts can also lead to personal stress and emotional strain for individuals involved, impacting their well-being and job satisfaction. Furthermore, unresolved workplace conflict can damage professional relationships and hinder teamwork. It can create divisions and factions within teams, leading to decreased cooperation and collaboration. This can ultimately negatively effect innovation, creativity, and the ability to effectively solve problems. It is crucial to address and resolve conflicts in a timely and constructive manner to maintain a healthy and productive work environment. This takes times, special attention to detail and interpersonal relationships, and, at times, the need to be creative in your solutions. An experienced Certified Human Resources Professional can assist with this. As you focus on what your customers need, HR can focus on what your employees need.
