The End-of-Summer Reset:
5 Helpful Tips for Employers
As summer begins to wind down, there’s a natural shift in the workplace. Vacation schedules start to settle, routines return, and before we know it, we’re heading into
the final stretch of the year. It makes this a great time for employers to pause, take stock, and reset.
You don’t need a major HR overhaul. A few intentional check-ins now can help create clarity, strengthen engagement, and set your team up for a strong finish to the year.
1. Review Your People Priorities
Think back to the people-related priorities you set earlier this year. What has moved forward? What has stalled? And what has changed along the way?
Take a quick look at recruitment needs, retention, training, succession planning, employee engagement, and any other priorities that matter to your organization. Not
everything needs to remain a priority simply because it was one in January.
Ask yourself:
What are the two or three people priorities that deserve our attention for the rest of the year?
2. Reconnect With Your Team
Summer can be a bit of a revolving door with vacations, modified schedules, and people covering for one another. As everyone settles back into a more regular rhythm,
make time to reconnect.
This doesn’t have to mean another formal meeting. A thoughtful conversation can tell you a lot about how your employees are doing and where they may need support.
Three questions worth asking:
-
What’s working well right now?
-
What’s making your job harder than it needs to be?
-
What would help you finish the year strong?
The important part?
Listen to the answers. You may uncover a simple process improvement, communication
gap, or opportunity to better support your team.
3. Clean Up Your HR Documentation
HR paperwork may not be the most exciting item on the list, but future-you will be glad you did it.
Take some time to review employee files, signed policies and agreements, training records, job descriptions, performance documentation, and any outstanding HR paperwork.
This is also a good opportunity to ask:
Do our policies and practices still reflect how we actually operate? If the answer
is no, it may be time for an update.
4. Revisit Goals and Performance Expectations
There’s still plenty of year left to make meaningful progress, but employees need to know what success looks like.
Check in on individual and team goals. Are expectations still realistic? Have priorities shifted? Does everyone understand what they’re accountable for between now and
year-end?
A quick conversation today can prevent a frustrating performance conversation a few months from now.
5. Plan for the Final Quarter
The last few months of the year have a habit of arriving quickly. Take a look ahead now at staffing requirements, vacation requests, statutory holidays, year-end deadlines,
performance reviews, compensation conversations, training needs, and any seasonal demands that may affect your team.
A little planning now can make the year-end rush much more manageable.
A Reset, Not a Restart
You don’t need to reinvent everything heading into fall. The goal is simply to pause long enough to identify
what’s working, what needs attention, and what will make the biggest difference in the months ahead.
And if you only do one thing? Ask your team those three questions. Their answers might
tell you exactly where to start.
