Workplace Culture
What Should The Focus Be?

Workplace Culture – What is it?
Workplace culture can be negative or positive and both are created from a variety of factors. In order to ensure your company has a positive culture, you need to be proactive and consistent in your dedication to creating and maintaining it. The good news is your dedication and mindfulness will be rewarded many times over. It is proven that companies who have a positive workplace culture have higher employee retention, a more organic marketing reach, increased productivity and often elevated profitability.
A few key aspects to focus on
- Leadership. Leadership plays a crucial role in the success of a team. A strong and effective leader has the power to ignite inspiration, boost motivation, and foster a culture of innovation within the team. Their guidance and support can lead to remarkable achievements and create a positive work environment. On the flip side, a poor leader can have detrimental effects, causing demotivation, decreased productivity, and ultimately driving talented employees to seek opportunities elsewhere. It’s important for leaders to recognize the impact they have on their team and strive to embody the qualities of a great leader. By cultivating trust, providing clear direction, and offering support, leaders can empower their team members to reach their full potential and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
- Values. Your company’s core values are like a beacon, guiding every decision and action. They define who you are, what you stand for, and why you do what you do. At the best workplaces, these values are not just words on a wall, but the driving force behind everything. When shared values lead the way, trust becomes the cornerstone of the relationship between employer and employee. This trust empowers and engages everyone, leading to a culture of innovation, creativity, and high productivity. It’s not about rigid rules and policies; it’s about a shared belief system that brings out the best in everyone. When clear values are not present it can be difficult for employees to buy into the culture and add to its growth and organic nature.
- Belonging. Valuing a sense of belonging in the workplace is imperative for all employees. It goes beyond acknowledging their contributions to the company and extends to appreciating them as individuals. In organizations with a positive workplace culture, fostering a genuine sense of belonging is not merely a catchphrase but a tangible reality. Employees are genuinely esteemed, and their inclusion and unique qualities are celebrated. The aim is not only to cultivate a positive work environment but also to create a community where everyone feels validated, respected, and included. If this is not achieved, the negative effects will spread into all areas of your company creating division, focus on selves instead of the team, decreased productivity and increased absenteeism.
- Innovation. Creating a safe and open environment for employees to share their ideas and make suggestions is crucial for fostering innovation in the workplace. In fact, research shows that when managers prioritize this, employees are a whopping 31 times more likely to view their workplace in an inspiring way inviting creativity and forward thinking. When a company embraces an innovative culture, it not only sparks new ideas and solutions, but also cultivates a sense of loyalty and confidence among its employees. This, in turn, leads to a greater willingness among employees to go the extra mile and contribute their best efforts to the organization. By encouraging a culture of innovation, managers can inspire their teams to reach new heights and drive the company forward in exciting and impactful ways. Without an opportunity to contribute to a company’s innovation, it is simply just a job instead of a future.
- Opportunities for growth. By providing your employees with the tools and opportunities to learn new skills and grow professionally, you will in turn have higher employee satisfaction and productivity. When you establish clear paths for promotions, which can often be based on performance and meeting certain goals, you empower your employees to be the driving force in their achievements. You want your employees to know that upward mobility within the organization is not just a possibility, but a reality. A professional development plan may include options such as online or in-person training programs, mentorships, tuition reimbursement for continuing education or advanced degrees, lunch and learns, and regular meetings to determine employee goals and help them achieve those goals. By showing you are dedicated to supporting your employees in their professional growth you letting them know that you believe in them and value them as part of the team. Without opportunities for learning or growth, employees often become unsatisfied, bored and sometimes resentful in their roles inevitably searching for the next best thing.
